The largest and most colourful squirrel of the genus Sundasciurus, displaying such striking geographical colour variation in Borneo that populations from different parts of the island bear little resemblance to one another.
Medium-sized, with a 21.5–25 cm body and a 24–29 cm tail; speckled grey head, shoulders and forelegs, off-white, dull orange or reddish-brown underparts, and a glossy black or black-banded grey tail. It is the largest and most colourful Horse-tailed Squirrel.
Found mainly in primary lowland forest, though also in secondary and logged forest; leaves nibbled fruit and seed remains beneath feeding trees.
Primary and secondary lowland forest up to 1000 m in Malaysia and 1500 m in Borneo, across the southern half of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Sumatra and Borneo.
Omnivorous, feeding mainly on seeds and fruit.
Solitary and diurnal, with parental care provided by the female.
Assessed as Near Threatened due to the ongoing decline of its lowland forest habitat.
Deforestation and conversion of the lowland forest on which it depends.
